Step 1: Set Clear Goals
Put things into perspective. Before getting down to any improvements, you need to know what you want to achieve and where you should start.
Step 2: Assess
To be in control of the IT Operations, identify the current state of the processes, technologies and expertise of your team.

To properly measure the improvement, define the KPIs and metrics, as well as compose a comprehensive assessment report.

Step 3: Design a Solution
To build a roadmap that will lead to the desired operations metrics, I suggest dividing improvements into two major groups:
- Process improvement recommendations provide the guidelines, instructions and practices that are focused on the organizational improvements and other process-related areas.
- Technology recommendations are mainly focused on tools, techniques and expertise.
Step 4: Prototype and Prove the Concept
Validate the estimates and ensure that there are no major implementation issues that can affect the roadmap. As a rule, this step takes from two weeks to a month.
Step 5: Implement the Solution
Following the established objectives, implement the designed solution according to the defined roadmap.

Software products are continuously being enriched with features so the operations process needs to stay in line with the products.
